Job Description
Our client is seeking a Principal/Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join its growing consultancy team in Manchester. This permanent, full-time role offers hybrid working and the opportunity to lead a diverse portfolio of geotechnical projects across infrastructure, transportation, water, energy, utilities and development.
You will provide technical leadership across project lifecycles, from feasibility and ground investigation through to detailed design and construction support. The role will also involve project management, client engagement, business development and mentoring junior engineers within a multidisciplinary environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage geotechnical engineering projects from inception through to completion, ensuring delivery to programme, budget and quality requirements
Plan, procure and supervise ground investigations, including the interpretation of geotechnical and geological data
Undertake and review geotechnical analyses and detailed design calculations
Design and assess foundations, retaining structures, slopes, earthworks and embankments
Prepare factual and interpretative reports, technical specifications and construction documentation
Provide geotechnical input and construction phase support across multidisciplinary infrastructure projects
Act as a technical reviewer and mentor, supporting the development of less experienced engineers
Develop client relationships, support tenders and fee proposals, and contribute to business growth opportunities

Job Requirements:
Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or a related discipline
Chartered Engineer, Chartered Geologist or working towards professional chartership
Significant experience delivering geotechnical projects within a consultancy environment
Strong experience in ground investigations, geotechnical data interpretation and technical report writing
Proven capability in the design of foundations, retaining structures, slopes and earthworks
Experience managing projects, programmes, budgets, resources and client relationships
Experience reviewing technical work and mentoring junior engineers
Strong understanding of Eurocodes, British Standards and current geotechnical engineering practice
Desirable Skills:
Experience delivering major infrastructure projects across transportation, water, energy or development sectors
Knowledge of NEC contracts and project delivery frameworks
Experience supporting business development, bid preparation and fee proposals
Proficiency in geotechnical modelling and analysis software such as PLAXIS, GeoStudio or equivalent
Knowledge of BIM and digital engineering processes
Strong commercial awareness, stakeholder management and communication skills
Interest in innovation, sustainability and modern methods of project delivery
